McHenry County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

HOW TO GET AN ANIMAL OUT OF A TREE
Animals love to hide in trees, especially those of them that can crawl and jump. Some of them climb these trees in search of food while others seek shelter. For instance, cats and squirrels may climb trees to hide for some time, while birds and bats live up there permanently. Most birds build their nests and raise their young ones in strong tree branches while some hibernate in trees so that they can suck or chew the fruits throughout the cold season. These animals love to climb trees that are situated in human settlements. In your case, it may be a squirrel, cat, bird, bat, or any other kind of animal. However, the most important thing you need to know is that having these animals around trees close to your home is a bad idea. This is because the tree branches, which are usually close to the roof, will grant them access to your home where they can enter into the attics, walls, etc.

There are different ways to remove an animal from a tree. The first thing you need to do is cut down big branches, particularly those at the uppermost part of the tree where the animals can jump on. You should also cut off branches that extend close to your roof so that animals can’t use them to gain entrance to your home. The next step is to trim the tree considerably so that it won’t grow too big and have excess branches.

Furthermore, you can get an animal out of a tree by spraying the tree with irritants. This solution may work for some time, but the rains and winds will eventually decrease its efficiency and the animals will return. Animal irritants can only be used as a temporary solution; it cannot remove the animal permanently.

Since animals can gain access to your house through tree branches that extend into your roof, make sure you plant trees very far from the foundation of your home, so that animals won’t be able to gain entrance. Certain trees grow fast and some even grow faster after they’re cut down. If the trees around your home grow very fast you can apply certain chemicals that will stunt their growth. You can’t set traps on trees and it’s inhumane to poison fruits and leaves that animals consume on trees. So, the most effective way to keep the animals away from your home is to cut off plenty of branches and stems from the tree. Remember, during the trimming and cutting of tree branches, the nest of some animals may fall. If this happens, do well to relocate the animal to a distant place. Squirrels are great climbers, so you’ll likely see them coming back even after you trim the trees. Here a few things you can do to get squirrels out of a tree:

Remove all bird feeders that are on the tree and close to your roof. Squirrels can jump from a tree branch and reach for a feeder that’s 8 feet away. Remember, if there’s a constant source of food, the animal won’t leave.
Wrap a metal band around the tree, from the ground to 6ft up the tree. This will make climbing difficult for the squirrel.
Push squirrels away by hanging a sock wet with ammonia from a tree limb. Dip the sock into the ammonia and allow it to sit for some time. Then attach it to the tree with twine or tiny rope.
You can also use a squirrel repellent that is made with cayenne pepper. Use the repellent once a week or after a heavy downpour.
